NARCOS: RISE OF THE CARTELS Pc Game REVIEW I’ve just seen Narcos ‘ first series but I know enough to realize it’s a crime show: it shows stuff like police work, DEA protagonists catching lieutenants from Pablo Escobar, finding evidence, etc. Narcos: Rising of the Cartels includes almost none of this, and instead tries to tell the Medellin Cartel’s tale solely through turn-based tactical fighting in XCOM format.
Let’s think here about the elephant in the room: that’s a fucking way of portraying police work. The game asks the player to “carry a gang member in” in the very first scene of the tutorial. It involves shooting him frequently, since this is the only contact open to you (until grenades are unlocked). Occasionally operations will have targets such as “getting evidence” or “rescuing a prisoner,” but just as often as “assassinating a member of the cartel.”
Clearly, Narcos the TV show was attempting to recognize the police’s amoral methods, but Narcos the game does that only because it features clips from the show. This is the risk of an environment for a’ real world,’ it raises concerns from the real world.
I’m not against depicting the drug war in a strategy game, but Rise of the Cartels is not really interspersing the fighting bits with anything but cutscenes and levelling the troops up. It would benefit if there were some sort of logistical overlay between operations displaying the police conducting actual police work (or the gangs increasing their influence), but even then there would still be an extraordinary amount of violence even for Columbia in the 1980s. As the show is the most interesting parts of Narcos — Escobar’s attempt at a political career or the radical revolutionaryM-19 wildcard element— just don’t suit within the limited structure of the game.
Working as the Narcos makes things less politically complex, because you at least know you’re clearly the bad guys, but the two ads are quite close. All teams use reskinned models of the same vehicles, with separate cutscenes and plot objectives only coming together.
